Career Development Series/Applied Certificate

Program Overview

The CDC courses will be of interest to individuals in the workforce who are interested in increasing their skills in the area of computers, business writing, financial management, human resource management or band administration. Each course is 20 hours in length. A completion of eight courses is required to complete the Applied Certificate in Career Development. The individual courses may be purchased by a First Nations community or they can be delivered as a complete program.

  • Bookkeeping Concepts
    CDC 1200

    An introduction to the basics of bookkeeping including journal entries, cash flow, revenues and expenses. This course will assist employees in band offices, tribal councils or other organizations.

  • Business Writing Skills
    CDC 1400

    A course designed to enhance business writing skills. Basic writing skills are reviewed and applied to a number of common business situations, such as writing reports and proposals, letter and memos, and progress reports. The use of Microsoft Word is required when submitting assignments. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Change Management
    CDC 1311

    This course examines the process of change and how to help an organization and employees cope and accept the change. It covers topics such as preparing the environment and employees for change, education, implementing the change in a culturally responsive manner and evaluating the organization change. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Coaching in the Workplace
    CDC 1304

    Historically, leading has been treated as an integral part of the management process. Today leadership is regarded as a separate and distinct ability, and part of these leadership skills involves 'coaching employees to success'. This module will deal with issues such as encouragement, motivation and open communication in order to successfully 'coach' your workplace. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Computing Fundamentals
    CDC 1100

    The main objective of this courseware is to introduce the students to the basic commands, functions, and capabilities of a computer. It is designed for computer users who are new to computers, word processing, or who only plan to use Word occasionally. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Customer Service

    This course discusses the importance of customer service to organizations. It covers topics as customer priority, service qualities and the benefits of a strong customer service. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Dealing with Difficult People
    CDC 1307

    In some cases the quality of your relationships with your bosses (supervisors), co-workers and customers determines your happiness and efficiency in the workplace. Job satisfaction is lower among people who find themselves caught up in toxic relationships in the workplace. Many people suffer unnecessarily as a result of these relationships. Unfortunately, they don't know any strategies to deal with difficult people. This course will help individuals become skilled recognizing difficult people and learning to deal with difficult people. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Decision Making & Critical Thinking

    The course reviews the steps in the decision making process and the process of group consultation and participation. Techniques to examine situations from outside the box are discussed and examined. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Facilitation Skills
    CDC 1303

    A course designed to enhance and build on students' facilitation skills and examine methods for improving productivity in the workplace. Leadership and team facilitation techniques are discussed and practiced. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Financial Management & Budgeting
    CDC 1202

    This course covers the basics of the budgeting process from basic objectives to planning and operations. It will allow employees to budget revenues and expenses more accurately and show how to work with variances and improve their budgeting skills. As well, this course offers the student a brief introductory class in basic financial statement preparation including the income statement, statement of changes in owners' equity, the balance sheet and the statement of changes in financial position. Also included are the calculations of the basic financial ratios, which facilitate financial analysis of the corporation by the non-financial manager. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Government Reporting Requirements

    The objective of this course is to ensure all managers have an understanding of what is required when reporting to various governments. Some of the topics include: Explain the importance of effective financial governance and management in fulfilling an organizations' mission and mandate. Recognize the responsibilities and liabilities of directors with respect to financial governance and management. Explain principles and practices of effective financial governance and management. Establish objectives and performance measures for managers with respect to their management of financial resources. Describe the role of the board and its financial committee(s) in preparing, reviewing and approving financial plans and budgets. Describe the role of management and staff in preparing, reviewing and implementing financial plans and budgets. Explain the budgeting cycle and fiscal year end. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations, First Nations boards or other agencies.

  • Human Resource Planning

    This course examines the value of human resource planning and how it should be part of an organization's overall plan. It discusses topics that include the role of a human resource department, legislation, confidentiality and good practices in human resources policy and procedures. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Managing Chaos in the Workplace

    This course examines how 'chaos' is affecting your workplace productivity; and how to deal effectively with it. Different techniques and approaches are covered that address customer and employee demands; managing your schedule and managing your energy and efforts.

  • Managing Conflict
    CDC 1300

    An introduction to the strategies and principles of conflict management. Strategies involve examining mediation techniques and tools use to resolve conflict. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • MS Access
    CDC 1104

    Level 1 teaches students how to create simple databases, create and modify database objects including tables, forms, reports and queries. You will use a variety of commands, functions, and Microsoft Office Access 2007 capabilities. It is designed for computer users who are new to database programs or who only plan to use Access occasionally. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

    Students who complete this course can be on their way to preparing for a Microsoft Certified Application Specialist exam. By completing the other levels available for this application, students will have reviewed all of the exam objectives.

  • MS Excel
    CDC 1102

    Microsoft® Office Excel 2007 – Level 1 teaches students how to work with worksheets and workbooks to analyze data using a variety of features to create, modify and format common business reports such as budgets, inventory reports, invoices, and charts. This course is designed for students who desire the skills necessary to create, edit, format, and print basic Microsoft Office Excel 2007 worksheets and manage and audit numerical reports. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

    Students who complete this course can be on their way to preparing for a Microsoft Certified Application Specialist exam. By completing the other levels available for this application students will have reviewed all of the exam objectives.

  • MS Outlook
    CDC 1105

    Microsoft® Office Outlook 2007 Level 1 teaches students how Outlook is structured, how to use the Mail module to create, edit, format, and send messages as well as how to manage incoming messages, use the Calendar module to schedule meetings, and then use the Contacts module to create and edit a list of contacts. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

    Students who complete this course can be on their way to preparing for a Microsoft Certified Application Specialist exam. By completing the other levels available for this application, students will have reviewed all of the exam objectives.

  • MS PowerPoint
    CDC 1103

    Microsoft® Office PowerPoint 2007 – Level 1 teaches students how to create presentations. You will use a variety of commands, functions, and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 capabilities. The course is designed for computer users who are new to presentation manager programs, or who only plan to use PowerPoint occasionally. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

    Students who complete this course can be on their way to preparing for a Microsoft Certified Application Specialist exam. By completing the other levels available for this application, students will have reviewed all of the exam objectives.

  • MS Word
    CDC 1101

    Microsoft® Office Word 2007 – Level 1 teaches students how to create and edit documents, save, open or close documents, apply formatting options, set tabs and indents, change the view mode, manipulate the text using features such as copy and paste, and preview and then print the document. This course is designed for students who desire the skills necessary to create, edit, format, and print basic Microsoft Office Word 2007 documents. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Presentation Skills

    This course examines the characteristics of an effective facilitator; the principles of public speaking and effective presentations; planning meeting and use of audio/visual tools. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Project Management

    This course defines and explains projects and project management. The steps in project management are examined that include initiating the project, planning the project, controlling the project and evaluating the success of the project. The course is relevant to individuals, companies or employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Proposal Writing

    This course will introduce the student to the process of proposal writing whether it is for internal, external readers or funding agencies. Students will be introduced to the concepts of the various types of proposals and the importance of writing a strong proposal. Topics include providing a strong purpose and objectives of the proposal, thorough background analysis and solid financial plan. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Simply Accounting
    CDC 1201

    This is an introduction to accomplishing basic accounting tasks using accounting software. Students will begin with a company file and enter transactions for general ledger, accounts receivables, accounts payable, inventory, and managing capital expenses. This course will review some accounting fundamentals as they relate to the transaction at hand only. This course uses basic first level accounting information. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Staff Appraisal, Motivation & Departure

    An understanding of the importance of staff appraisal and constructive evaluation is essential to the evaluation, motivation and enhancement of employees. Performance assessment will allow the key players to: affirm and gain assurance from what they're doing well, identify things that need improvement, develop plans to guide and selfcorrect performance, and ultimately add value to the organization through a highly motivated and skilled workforce.   • Staff Recruitment & Selection

    This course provides an overview of the scope and importance of the recruitment, selection and staffing functions within the workplace. This course will provide to the students: An understanding of the importance of the recruitment, selection and staffing functions and its interdependence to strategic design. The ability to measure performance. The ability to design, develop and deliver performance measurements, screening and interviewing techniques. The student will also gain a conceptual understanding of the diverse role of the recruiter and their role in the organization. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Staff Training, Development & Retention

    This course provides an overview of the scope and importance of the Training and Development function with the workplace. Topics cover include: Understand the meaning of the terms performance management, training, and development. Describe the organizational, employee, and societal benefits of training and development. Discuss training and development in Canada. Understand and explain the role of the external and internal context of training and development. Understand the meaning of strategic human resources management (SHRM) and what makes training and development strategic. Discuss the instructional systems design (ISD) model of training and development. The learning objectives to complete are: The ability to implement a needs assessment. The ability to analyze the needs assessment; develop learning objectives and methods for measuring results; the ability to design, develop and deliver a training program.   • Strategic Planning

    This course will introduce the student to the components of a strategic planning process. This includes: Define strategic planning and its terminology. Explain how often strategic planning can productively occur. Explain the stability of a strategic plan. Differentiate strategic planning from long-term planning. Explain the benefits of strategic planning. Answer common objections to strategic planning. Identify strategic planning stakeholders. Identify the respective responsibilities of the board, management and staff of the organization for strategic planning. Describe the products of strategic planning.   • Stress Management

    This course examines the causes of stress including role and environmental stressors; their effect on the employee and on the workplace. Strategies and techniques to eliminate stress are examined. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Supervisory Skills

    This module will provide employees with the knowledge and understanding of supervisory skills and functions. It focus on front line supervisors and covers such areas as contemporary approaches to supervision, participation leadership and teams and the functions of management as applied at the supervisory level. The course is relevant to employees who may be employed in band offices, First Nations organizations or other agencies.

  • Team Building

    Team building exercises give students insight into team dynamics and help them work more effectively as members of a team. Topics include facilitation techniques, organization and team effectiveness, a model of team effectiveness, team membership styles, team design features, team development, team norms, team cohesiveness, shared goals, shared values and interdependence.   • Time Management

    This course explores time management, including taking control of your time behaviour, personal planning techniques, essential steps in planning the day and organizing meetings.     This course examines a variety of personalities that may affect the workplace. It overviews strategies to deal with different personalities and how to manage each personality type to improve employment productivity.
