(click item to view course description)This course provides an overview of the major responsibilities of a First Nations board including; determining the organization's mission and purpose, the selection of the chief executive officer, financial management, legal and ethical integrity, enhancing the organization's public image and assessing board performance.
This course describes the importance of effective financial governance and management; describes the role of the First Nations board and its financial committees in preparing, reviewing and approving financial plans and budgets; interprets statements of financial position; interprets statement of financial position and compares interim and audited financial statements.
This course identifies the roles, rights and responsibilities of First Nations boards and governing bodies. It explains the importance of strategic partnerships; the process and mechanism needed to ensure accountability; identifies potential barriers to effective governance, compares various models of governance and provides strategies for positive public relations.
This course will establish a broad framework for First Nations boards to work effectively with government organizations. It will identify the best practices in relating to governments and nongovernmental organizations; and the course will identify core principles, values and interests that will shape the boards relationship with outside agencies.
This course explains the importance of effective human resource management within First Nations Boards; identifies the best practices in human resource management; explains the importance of linking strategic planning and human resource planning; and identify the core principles, values and interests that will shape the management of its human resources.
This course explains the legal obligations of First Nations board members; explains the steps involved in forming a non-profit corporation; describes the legal forms of non-profit organizations; describes the management of risk and legal liability; and describes how to manage conflicts of interest.
This course explains the purpose and importance of policies; explains why First Nations boards should develop policies that govern the organization; describes the principles of good governance; and outlines the general steps involved in developing and maintaining organizational policies.
This course explains the importance of strategic planning for First Nations boards; demonstrates how strategic planning can productively occur; oversee the preparation for strategic planning; and oversee the conversion of strategic planning into action.
