Program Overview

There is an extreme shortage of skilled scaffolders in the scaffolding trade. This program is designed to give learners enough knowledge and experience to improve their employability in the scaffolding industry. The program covers the safety requirements on construction sites, safe use of tools and equipment, trade terminology, and assembly procedures for various types of scaffolding. This includes hands-on practice with various scaffolding systems, with an emphasis on industry expectations such as mobility, importance of safety, and professionalism. Safety training will include personal safety, Occupational Health & Safety regulations, and job site safety.

Delivery:

  • The program is a combination of classroom (35%) and practical experience (65%).

Course Description:

Specific topics covered in the curriculum include:

  • Essential Skills: Math, document use, communication skills.
  • Safety: Construction safety essentials, personal protective equipment, electrical hazards, heat and cold stress, good housekeeping, site orientations and policies, fire prevention, fall protection, confined space awareness, Safety Construction Orientation Training (SCOT) or Construction Safety Training System (CSTS), Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
  • Tools: Hand tools, portable power tools, and stationary power tools.
  • Rigging: Ropes, knots, material handling.
  • Materials: Lumber, planks, plywood, metal scaffold components, weights of materials.
  • Scaffold Regulations: Occupational Health & Safely (OH&S) regulations, Canadian Standards Association (CSA) regulations, manufacturer specifications.
  • Access Scaffolding Basics: Frame scaffold uses and erection procedures; modular scaffold uses and erection procedures; tube and clamp scaffold uses and erection procedures; level and layout procedures; blueprint reading.
  • Work Ethics: Employer expectations and employee responsibilities.

Admission Requirements:

  • Academic Requirement(s): Grade 10 with regular Math 10.
  • Non-Academic Requirement(s): Able to perform physical work and work at varying heights.

Career Opportunities:

  • Graduates will have employment opportunities with both unionized and non-union contractors.
