PROBATION AND DISCONTINUATION
Probationary or Discontinuation action is initiated by the Program Dean in communication with the Dean of Student Services and Enrolment. Probationary or Discontinuation action is endorsed by the Dean of Student Services and the VP of Student Services and Academics before documents are placed in the student’s file.
- A verbal warning is given to a student when there are concerns of poor attendance, low academic standing, or student conduct.
- A written letter of warning is given when the student fails to adhere to the verbal warning.
- Probationary action is taken if a student fails to adhere or comply to prior warning such as:
- Poor attendance
- Low academic standing (cumulative average less then 55%)
Concerns of student or academic conduct - The probationary period is to the end of the academic year.
*Note: Students who are required to discontinue may apply for an appeal as outlined in the appeal process.
- Discontinuation means that a student is officially withdrawn from a program for any but not limited to the following reasons:
- Failure to comply with probationary terms and conditions.
- Failure to meet the required average at the end of a semester or academic year will result in having to sit out one semester. Students reapplying for any SIIT program will be placed on academic/attendance probation upon acceptance.
- Students who are continuously enrolled in a Diploma program for more than three years may be Require to Discontinue. Students readmitted into a new program are placed on academic/attendance probation.
- Students who are repeating a course for the second time and fail to receive a passing grade will be required to discontinue from their program.
- Consistent disregard for expectations/regulations of student conduct as defined in this policy.
- Misconduct as outlined in this policy.
- Failure to pay tuition and required fees as defined in the tuition policy.
- Acts of violence or destruction of property at any SIIT campus or program site.
There are two categories of discontinuation:
- Withdrawal – Students advised to withdraw or voluntarily withdraw from the program due to academics/attendance.
- Required to Discontinue – Students Required to Discontinue cannot reapply for the period of one academic year.
